Madam, - There seems to be little realisation of the effect on small businesses in Ireland of increased insurance renewal premiums. The Marion Finucane radio programme recently drew attention to a small profitable business on which the general insurance premiums had increased from €12,000 to €39,000.
The Tanaiste has undertaken a review, but so far we hear of very small improvements in insurers' practice, mostly relating to motor insurance. What of liability insurance, relative to small business?
Surely the Government can call in the insurers concerned to explain or justify their increases. If they cannot, is it the case that European-owned insurers can charge as they wish, and is this why we are asked to vote Yes? - Yours, etc.,
