Sir, - If an award were to be put up for intransigence and bigotry, the Catholic bishops of Ireland/Britain and the GAA would have to be serious contenders for the prize. The GAA, by refusing the use of its grounds for a soccer match in the aftermath of the Omagh bombing, seems to be determined not to move one tiny step forward in the interests of peace. The Catholic bishops are not only determined not to take any steps forward but seem intent on taking a great leap backwards by banning Catholics from taking Communion in other Christian Churches. This would seem to be another desperate attempt to bring their flock to heel; but this edict is likely to be ignored by many Catholics who are no longer prepared to accept without question rules which are unjust and arguments which are obviously invalid. - Yours, etc., Carmel Courtney,
