Sir, - Many congratulations to former judge Rory O'Hanlon and Mr Pat Buckley for their eloquent denunciation of the International Criminal Court, which is apparently the greatest menace to Irish civilisation since the advent of television (The Irish Times, May 26th).
I was particularly impressed by Mr Buckley's lucid reasoning when he objected to the proposed international crime of forced pregnancy. He states that "forced pregnancy is not rape", but an attempt to foist abortion on Ireland by the back door. May I suggest other catchy slogans for the No campaign, such as "ethnic cleansing is not murder", "torture is good for the soul" and "They had international law in Atlantis and look what happened"?
The International Criminal Court offers some prospect that the war criminals and mass murderers of the future will be brought to justice. There is no reason at all to oppose the court, except to protect Slobodan Milosevic, Augusto Pinochet and their ilk. We can only hope that a burning concern for the individual liberty of such despots is too eccentric even for Irish anti-abortion campaigners. - Yours, etc.,
John Walsh, Dunshaughlin, Co Meath.
