Internships for politicians

Sir, – Here is my proposal to boost the economy and tackle the democratic deficit in one fell swoop.

Politicians should from now on serve a nine-month unpaid “internship” starting from the day of their election.

If, after that period elapses, they are shown to be rubbish, the electorate could decline the opportunity to hire them on a more permanent basis and could instead get another intern in. This could go on indefinitely if necessary.

It is a scheme of which I am sure the Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation would approve. – Yours, etc,
