Sir, - Kevin Myers is to be applauded (again) for drawing attention to the fundamentalist behaviour of the provo Taliban in Omagh - of all places - and Carrickmore in recent weeks. The new Northern Minister for Education, Martin McGuinness, needs to impress upon the slower learning members of his organisation that pluralism is not some sort of disease.
I have no wish to rehash everything that Mr Myers said about the appalling intimidation of the people of those towns, particularly Carrickmore; what concerns me here (again) is the ear-splitting silence of civil and human rights groups, "independent" and otherwise, about this fascism.
Where stands the Irish Council for Civil Liberties in all of this? Where is the Anti-Fascist League, for heaven's sake? Where are the placard-wielding SWP and the Joe Higgins party?
One day when they come for the above-mentioned, there will be no one left to bark. Silence is assent. - Yours, etc., Eddie Naughton,
Weavers Street, The Coombe, Dublin 8.
