Sir, – The new system is simply a digital version of the postal sorting areas, a 21st-century gloss on 19th-century technology, and suits no-one except An Post. – Yours, etc,
MAURICE D KELLIHER,
Tullyvale, Dublin 18.
Sir, – I must pronounce myself among those who are firmly in favour of the Eircode system.
Nightline has established itself as a successful, award-winning company – the biggest independent, home-grown delivery firm – employing more than 700 people and delivering to many tens of thousands more across the Republic and Northern Ireland. We might have more to lose, therefore, in terms of trade and reputation, if Eircode were to fail. However, I’m not afraid to say that I believe the system which is now operational is right for our needs and those of Ireland.
I acknowledge that there may well be issues to begin with but there are few schemes of this scale or complexity which do not experience teething problems at the very start.
Those will be dealt with in time, I’m sure, and I’m confident that people will come to realise Eircode’s benefits.
Having expended so much time, effort and money getting Eircode to this point, why not give it an opportunity to make the kind of difference which business, residents and Government badly need? – Yours, etc,
JOHN TUOHY,
Chief Executive,
Nightline Group,
Mygan Park,
Jamestown Road, Dublin 11.
Sir, – Spare a thought for all 1.811 million residents of Northern Ireland who have, since 1970, been assigned the Belfast (BT) postcode. – Yours, etc,
MALACHY THOMPSON,
Renmore, Galway.
Sir, – Ken Murray (July 15th) laments that the Eircode website does not provide a means of communication. Perhaps had he clicked on the "How to contact Eircode" FAQ he would be somewhat wiser. – Yours, etc,
PAT MULLEN,
Dundalk,
Co Louth.
