Sir, - I read with interest the letter from Dermot Fagan on Ireland and the Holocaust (February 14th).

I agree with him on many of the points he raised, particularly when he emphasises the fact that we should "remember" and not allow "words to fail us" as the French thinker Alain Finkielkraut said, whom he quotes in his letter. This is why we should also remember and never forget the 60-million-plus victims of the second World War on all sides, including over 250,000 Germans who died fighting Hitler and Fascism from inside Germany during that country's darkest period. In the same way, I am convinced that many decent Israeli citizens today, Jewish and Christian, deplore the outrageous conduct of their own government and military in recent times. - Yours, etc.,
