Sir, - I agree with Feargall Kenny (May 8th) that the introduction of charges for The Irish Times online merely serves to show the absurdity of the service ever having been free.

Given the recent financial crisis at the paper, my big fear was that Ireland.com may have had to go altogether. As someone who has recently relocated to the UK but who continues to have significant working links with Ireland, daily access to The Irish Times is essential for keeping in touch.

My only reservation concerns those on lower incomes who need the service but will be excluded due to lack of money. Might The Irish Times consider a concession rate to help people such as the unemployed and students? - Yours etc.,
