Sir, - There is now an ever-increasing flow of letters from concerned citizens and visitors to our shores about the appalling litter problem that blights our cities, towns and countryside, and which could seriously undermine our tourism and food industries.

Clearly, the silence of the local authorities is proof positive that they are not disputing these assertions. There is only one solution: the vigorous and continuous enforcement of the 1997 Litter Pollution Act.
