Sir, - It is a great pity to see the beauty of Dublin spoiled by the terrible amounts of litter in your city. My recent visit there was marred by being confronted everywhere I turned by papers, plastic bags, cans and bottles. I believe you have a new species there - the plastic bag tree! I was dismayed to see so many trees in the city and suburbs festooned with plastic carrier bags. Even in your main thoroughfares such as O'Connell Street, the feeling at times is of wading in rubbish. And I found catching the DART from Killester station, near where I was staying with friends, a sorry experience each day - what a dirty station.
It is sad that my memories of Dublin are not only of a wonderful city, great pubs, and friendly people, but of filthy litter edging the streets and railway and garlanding the buildings and trees. Sadder still is that it makes me reluctant to return. - Yours, etc., Nick Lee, Victoria Road,
