IRELAND OF THE WELCOMES

CARMEL COURTNEY,

CARMEL COURTNEY,

Sir, - Mr John O'Donoghue is seeking new ways to attract visitors to Ireland and is proposing to spend several millions on the project in the coming months. One small step which might be taken, which could cost very little, would be to delete the many offensive signs printed on huge rocks on hillsides in Wicklow, Kerry and West Cork. English visitors are hardly likely to return to areas where the locals greet them with messages such as "Brits Out" "Up the IRA" or "Bring Home the Colombia Three".

Some of these notices have been there for years and it is impossible to understand why those involved in tourism and other businesses in these areas have never taken any action to delete these insults which do not represent the views of any but the tiniest minority of Irish people. - Yours, etc.,

CARMEL COURTNEY, Sandyford Road, Dublin 16.
