Sir, – Jean-Claude Junker, who is now head of the European Commission, was prime minister of Luxembourg during the time that the Luxembourg authorities endeavoured to minimise the tax burden on hundreds of companies. That same gentleman is leading a drive in the European Commission to make large multinationals pay a fair amount of tax.
How can these politicians expect anything but cynicism from European citizens? – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I think Dermot Cooper misses the point (January 29th). Most people are not looking for the corporate tax rate to be increased. They are looking for the current rate to be applied. – Yours, etc,
