Sir, - I was shocked to learn from Ms de Valera that the EU is impinging on our unique culture here in Ireland. This must have been so insidious that it hasn't been visible to the plain people of Ireland.
I would be most grateful if the Minister could clarify which directives she means and which items of our cherished culture are under threat. Then we could be alert to the erosive European influence and not be seduced by such enticements as structural funding.
I would also ask Ms de Valera, as Minister for Arts, what is the proportion of films and TV shows that we import into Ireland from Europe, relative to our imports from the US and UK. Which has the stronger influence on our culture: EU directives or Hollywood films?
Could the unexpected criticism of the EU by the Minister be a nervous reaction to the fact that Ireland may soon be expected to contribute to less fortunate new EU members? - Yours, etc.,
Maire Ni Raghallaigh, Lower Janemount, Sunday's Well, Cork.
