Madam, - The Irish Times of March 7th had two items on different pages which really should have been placed side by side.
On page 12 Enda Kenny, in his article on the education system, writes that "in order to improve things for the future, we need honestly to assess where we are right now". He points to the fact that if the real standard of achievement in Irish were to be replicated in Geography, a Leaving Cert student would not be able to find France on the map of Europe.
On page 13 a chart of Leaving Cert results shows that marks given for Irish are higher than those given for any other subject, including English. - Yours, etc,
