Madam, - It is heartening to see that the Government will change laws and policies once the Supreme Court has made a ruling interpreting the Irish Constitution. Yet even more heartening is Article 6 of the Constitution. It states that it is up to no one but the people of Ireland "in final appeal, to decide all questions of national policy, according to the requirements of the common good."
The words "final appeal" seem particularly important. Many thousands of us (the people) keep making it clear we are against our Government's support of America's war in Iraq. Yet, so far, our Government keeps ignoring us.
Why don't we all exercise our constitutional rights and post the Government a signed declaration stating that, as a "final appeal" under Article 6 of the Irish Constitution, supporting this war is against our national policy and the common good and that Government policy must be changed?
The more thousands who wrote in, the more the Government would want to obey the Constitution and change its policies. Wouldn't it? - Yours, etc,
JAMES HYDE, Main Street, Lismore, Co Waterford.
