Sir, –Dublin City Council's arrangements for hosting the IronMan event on Sunday rendered the capital impassable and did little for the wellbeing of its citizens.
Closing all of the city’s Liffey bridges until mid-morning – with the unhelpful suggestion that those wishing to use them for work, attendance at religious services, or purely for social reasons, should try the M50 Westlink Bridge – was an insult. All cross-city public transport was also suspended.
Dublin possesses so few flyovers or underpasses (and none in the city centre) that its suitability for events of this nature – including the Dublin City Marathon on its present route – must be called into question. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Congratulations to all participants and finishers of the first official IronMan event in Dublin (Conor Pope, “No gain without pain, but where’s the pain?”, August 10th). Quite a feat.
I suggest that next year an additional layer of challenge be added by requiring all contestants to read a chapter of Ulysses before jumping into the sea at Sandycove. – Yours, etc,
ULTAN Ó BROIN,
Dublin 8.
