Madam, - Congratulations to Breda O'Brien for her article headed "Buying into a wholly Catholic and Apostolic education" (Education Today, February 13th).
The passage that most interested me was as follows: "Anyway, whenever commitment to the Catholic church is mentioned, it is sexual morality that is the touchstone, something that has always puzzled me greatly.
Why is sexual morality the great arbiter? Why not honesty, integrity, commitment to social justice, or even good old-fashioned compassion?"
Like Ms O'Brien, I have been puzzled greatly over the years by the same question. In the list of the seven deadly sins of the Catholic Church there was no mention of lies and dishonesty. Why not, one wonders. After all, the the eighth commandment of God says: "Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbour". In fact, Jesus described Satan as "the father of lies".
If lies and dishonesty are not deadly sins, what are they? In my view, they are at the root of most of the world's evils.- Yours, etc,
