Sir, - I was surprised and dismayed that you would sully your highly respected columns by publishing Laurence Power's letter of December 20th. His venomous and provocative attack on the State of Israel was unwarranted.
Perhaps he does not know that this "gangster state" is the only democracy in the Middle East.
In his last paragraph, he alludes to the Holocaust, remarking that it was ironic that the Jews should use the same tactics as the Nazis. This, of course, is the ultimate insult, not unknown among anti-Semites.
It is precisely because of the Holocaust that Israel has to defend herself by all means against enemies who have sworn to destroy her and her people. - Yours, etc.,
