ISRAEL AND THE PALESTINIANS

CONOR McCARTHY,

CONOR McCARTHY,

Madam, - D. Sowby (December 3rd) refers to concern at the "so-called 'occupation'" of the West Bank and Gaza Strip as being a "mere smokescreen for the real goal, which is the removal of the Jewish state from 'Arabia'."

One wonders exactly what Israel would have to do for its policies to count as a true "occupation". Clearly, it would have to do more than locate 400,000 of its citizens there as illegal colonists; it would have to have more than 250 illegal checkpoints; it would have to use even more than the 80 per cent of the water supply it already uses; it would have to build even more roads that are for the use of the IDF and Israeli settlers only.

Perhaps then D. Sowby might recognise what is actually going on in Israel/Palestine, but I am not holding my breath. - Yours, etc.,
