Madam, - Why is it that the Irish media are so preoccupied with the Israel-Palestinian conflict compared with a multitude of other conflicts dotting the globe?

We don't, for example, witness many in the media or letter-writers from your readers taking a passionate stance on the North-South Korea or Chechnya-Russian conflicts.

Even your Rite and Reason columnist of December 21st chose to allude to this conflict by using her religious beliefs to criticise the Israelis.

I would like to see more pundits like Fintan O'Toole and Kevin Myers who are blessed with a cosmopolitan mindset as well as a lively world view of the planet they inhabit, and are not inhibited by the peer pressure of supposedly inherited localised wisdom.

It is only when this more expansive outlook prevails that we will be able to discuss conflicts, such as the Israel-Palestinian one, without all the emotive shades that normally colour the collective imagination. - Yours, etc.,
