Madam, - Proinsias De Rossa's inflammatory article (Opinion, March 9th) did nothing to further the cause of peace in the Middle East and was offensive in the extreme.

Unfortunate as it is, the purpose of Israel's security fence is to save lives. It is not intended to establish political borders and it certainly is not intended to inflict upon the Palestinians any of the horrors that some of their number routinely visit on innocent Israelis. Assuming that Palestinian terrorism is halted, it is to be hoped that the fence will eventually be dismantled.

For Mr De Rossa to invoke the Holocaust and the horrors that occurred during that period only serves to perpetuate the hatred of Israel that is currently seething in the Middle East and elsewhere.

As for the security fence itself, if it saves even one life (Jewish or otherwise), it will have served its purpose. In this regard, it has achieved its purpose many times over. - Yours etc.,
