Sir, – Iveagh Gardens, a gift from the Guinness family to the people of Dublin, was intended to be a peaceful park. Why does the OPW want to turn it into an outdoor festival hall? Their encroachment grows year by year. The latest has locked out the public since the beginning of July, just when the fine weather arrived.

Yes, the rock music will end, the birds will return, new rolls of grass will repair the ruined lawns, the litter will be removed and local people allowed back in – but something precious is gradually being destroyed. – Yours, etc,
