Sir, – In former taoiseach John Bruton’s judgement, bankers’ actions and their successful lobbying to ensure little or no market regulation (lobbying which continues to the present day) were not responsible for the financial crisis of recent years and bankers were some sort of innocent bystanders in relation to the enormous damage done by that crisis to our country and its citizens. So we now know precisely how much weight to give to Mr Bruton’s other judgement – that the Easter Rising was “unnecessary” and that genuine and real independence (although with no given time frame) was “inevitable”.
