Sir, - Has the country gone mad with this talk of John Hume as a possible President? Has it not crossed the national pea-brain that this would be the greatest act of irredentism since 1920? It would be an on-the-ground implementation of Articles 2 and 3. Have we learned nothing in 30 years?
Secondly, he has apparently said that his focus would be the bringing of investment - important, of course, but a very narrow vision of the Presidency. Thirdly, do we really want our country represented by "Mr Northern Ireland" and thus associated firmly in everyone's mind with trouble and violence? We have, unfortunately, no guarantee that that is over.
Fourthly, a large part of the motivation is the desire of the parties to avoid expense. How dare they treat us like this?
