Sir, - I wish to echo the sentiments of Mary Banotti MEP, in her letter dated 4th July and also to express my sincerest congratulations to her. She seems to be the first woman and also the first politician in this country to honestly and publicly admit that in many situations joint custody can offer a better parenting solution.
But may I suggest that as long as:
(a) The legal system in the country promotes an adversarial approach to Family Law,
(b) Psychiatrists continue to favour sole custody solutions for some inexplicable reason and
(c) Our politicians continue to avoid addressing this issue, it is unlikely there will be any change in the status quo in this country.
It is my opinion that in a democracy it should be representatives of the people to address such social inequalities and not just pay up service to them. - Yours etc.,
