Judicial appointments

Sir, – I note that a correspondent from the legal profession bemoans the denial of the appointment of 20 extra judges and the impact that this will have on access to justice by businesses and the most vulnerable in our society (Letters, July 15th).

Of course, by far the most intractable barrier to access to our justice system is the cost of litigation. Reasonable access is available to those with deep pockets but the rest can just take their chances.

It would perhaps be instructive to hear some views from the profession as to how this more pervasive barrier might be dealt with. – Yours, etc,
