CATHLEEN BENSON,
Madam, - How wonderful to read in your edition of December 30th all 105 lines of the Editorial "Keeping the arts centre stage". A change is taking place in Irish society and your article may help that process by encouraging people to take space and time to think more deeply about the importance of the arts in all our lives.
People are growing tired of "fumbling in the greasy till", gradually realising that riches gained are of no lasting value, whereas the arts contribute values beyond all riches - riches to the spirit, the mind and the imagination.
There is already evidence that a renaissance is taking place in our midst. Small choirs and small orchestras are making a new sound in almost every county in Ireland so that we no longer have to travel to Dublin to hear good music.
Perhaps the Minister, Mr O'Donoghue, will find a song in his heart for the promotion of this most joyous nation of musicians and artists. - Yours, etc.,
CATHLEEN BENSON,
Naas,
Co Kildare.
