JOHN O'SHEA,
Madam, - Western leaders and commentators have been quick to welcome the ending of the corrupt 24-year presidency of Daniel Arap Moi, which was a time of much misery for the Kenyan people.
It is all very well for them to speak up now that he is gone, but it would have prevented much suffering if they had found the courage to do so over the past 24 years of misrule. They were just as silent during the 29 years that Maputo ravaged Zaire, reducing its population to penury in the process.
There are other regimes in Africa that are as bad if not worse than Moi's that the West, far from criticising, actually assists. This disgraceful lack of courage is adding to the misery of millions of African people. - Yours, etc.,
JOHN O'SHEA,
GOAL,
Dun Laoghaire,
Co Dublin.
