Madam, - Fair play to Dermot Ashmore (August 14th) for his opposition to kicked scores in hurling. They should be prohibited for the same reason that hand-passed scores have been disallowed - they are impossible to defend against. In addition, the kicked scores are almost invariably accompanied by at least one of two technical transgressions - over-carrying the ball or dropping the hurley.
I won't comment on whether "Santy" broke either or both of these rules last Sunday but from the time he gained possession of the ball he had no intention of using his hurley. - Yours, etc.,
