Sir, – The statement that Killala’s round tower was built to repel Napoleon (Obituaries, June 23rd) would have greatly amused Sean Calleary who was blessed with a wise and gentle sense of humour.
The tower is at least 1,000 years old and formed part of a medieval monastic site associated with Muredach, patron saint of the Killala diocese. – Yours, etc,
