Sir, - At an international conference on whaling conservation held earlier this year, two countries, Japan and Norway, refused to obey a directive to stop killing whales, and left the meeting in protest. It emerged during the course of the debate that Norway was exporting its surplus whalemeat to the Far East.
For those of us who deplore the unnecessary slaughter of this gentle mammal, and wish to express their disgust in a positive way, I would suggest a boycott of goods imported from both these countries. The most obvious is motor fuel from Norway (whose trade name is "Statoil") and cars and electronic equipment from Japan.
This kind of action proved highly successful a few years ago, when Shell Oil was forced to abandon plans to sink one of its old oil rigs in the Atlantic by the combined action of Greenpeace and a boycott of all Shell Petroleum products. This simple, but effective weapon originated in Ireland; now let us use it in a worthy cause. - Yours, etc.,
Glasanon Road,
Dublin 11.
