Sir, - When is the Westmeath county manager going to do something about traffic control at Kinnegad? Surely, it is not beyond the realm of possibility to either (a) install temporary traffic lights or (b) create a roundabout at the junction where the roads to Galway and Sligo divide?
It is not too bad driving from Dublin, as traffic for Sligo has the right of way straight ahead, and traffic for Galway can easily turn left. But coming back to Dublin is a different story. As it is a T-junction, traffic from Sligo has the right of way, and this means that traffic from Galway turning right is held up, while vehicles going to and from Sligo/Mullingar continue on their merry way. There have been tailbacks of about four to five miles regularly on the road from Kilbeggan to Kinnegad.
Can the Minister for the Environment make some suggestion to the Westmeath county manager? If we had a roundabout at Kinnegad at least there would be fair play between traffic from Sligo and traffic from Galway. Until a roundabout is built, why not some temporary traffic lights? - Yours, etc., Frank Murphy,
Old Quarry, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
