Sir, - Mr Charles Keane, who wishes to install wind turbines on the Knockmealdown Mountains (The Irish Times, January 27th) now says he hopes "to bring people around" in support of his scheme. When he first introduced the idea, he insisted he would not proceed without the support of the community. We know now, from a house-to-house survey of 80 houses that would have the turbines within sight, that 64 are opposed. Only nine are in favour, and the rest have not yet taken a position. Meanwhile, more than 1,083 people - a huge number in this rural area - have signed a petition objecting to the scheme.
In granting Mr Keane permission to erect a temporary wind-monitoring mast, Waterford County Council has declared its detailed "concern" about the site proposed - at the heart of one of the most famed beauty spots in Ireland. Mr Keane should do the decent thing, as he promised he would in such circumstances, and scrap his plans - Yours, etc.,
Willie O'Donoghue, Chairman, Knockmealdown Protection Committee, Cappoquin, Co Waterford.
