Sir, - Michael McDowell of the Progressive Democrats describes Labour's proposals to introduce free primary health care in Ireland as "loony left", claiming that the system of free GP appointments in Britain doesn't work (The Irish Times, March 30th). He seems to be confusing his treatments.

I moved to Britain from Ireland in 1984 and have never had any problem getting a speedy appointment with a GP, either in London or in Bath, where I currently live, nor with registering with one.

Waiting in hospital accident and emergency departments is common and there are waiting lists to see a consultant for less urgent operations, though the waiting times are being reduced. But this has nothing to do with there being no charge to see a general practitioner. - Yours, etc.,
