A chara, - The Equality Authority recently published and launched a new booklet on equality in Ireland. It is a worthwhile publication explaining how groups and individuals can be discriminated against in areas such as race, sex, gender and religion. It should be of benefit to teachers and youth leaders around the country.
Unfortunately, the Equality Authority chose to publish the booklet in English only and not bi-lingually thereby discriminating against those who use Irish as their everyday language. It also failed to appreciate the needs of children attending Gaelscoileanna and living in Gaeltacht areas.
Users of the Irish language are well used to inequality and discrimination when it comes to dealing with Government Departments and State agencies. However, when inequality and discrimination are served up by the Equality Authority, then the pain is just that little bit greater. - Is mise,
