Madam, - The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals is concerned that the importance of the 2005 Leaving Certificate results be kept in context and in perspective.
NAPD is proud of the Irish post-primary system of education and of the level of achievement of students each year in the Leaving Certificate examination. Principals and deputy principals are, however, acutely aware of the level of stress and pressure being experienced by their students, both in anticipation of their results and in the aftermath. In a world that increasingly focuses on outputs, accountability and targets, the association is concerned that no students should feel their value and dignity as human beings are defined in terms of their achievement at Leaving Certificate level. It is also timely to remember that, in an era of lifelong learning, the Leaving Certificate opens up many pathways to further education.
Schools will provide the utmost support for their students during the coming weeks. It is important, before any results are issued, that students are aware that they are valued and appreciated for the person they are by family, friends, school and society alike. NAPD is most anxious that, during the coming weeks, analysis of performance, statistics and targets will maintain a level of balance and sensitivity.
It is the concern of this Association that each student should be affirmed and respected for whatever results s/he achieves. Hopefully there is a renewed appreciation in Irish society that many of the more important things in life remain beyond measure. - Yours, etc,
MARY A. McGLYNN, Director, National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2.
