Madam, - While I agree with Ian Hickey (June 15th) that "dawning comprehension" is by far the most worthwhile part of maths, I resent his implication that all students who attempt honours maths do so by rote learning. In my class we were encouraged to look for as many ways as possible to solve any given problem. I am sure that mine was not the only class in Ireland which did so. This type of learning does not "leak away" as quickly as Mr Hickey thinks.- Is mise,
