‘Let go’ – a euphemism that deserves the boot

Sir, – Regardless of loyalty, efficiency or length of service, when companies want to reduce staff levels, employees are fired, sacked, made redundant, laid off, dismissed, dumped, kicked out, discarded, banished, given their marching orders, booted out, sent packing, forced out, gotten rid of, shed, betrayed, ditched, considered surplus to requirement, rejected, ejected, ousted, abandoned, scrapped, disposed of, discharged, given the boot, eradicated or terminated, but please, they are not “let go”, which suggests they had asked for permission to leave their jobs.

Please kill off this patronising euphemism. – Yours, etc,

RONAN QUINLAN,

Baile Átha Cliath 15.
