Madam, - Nigel Mooney (March 31st) has hit upon probably one of the most aggravating - and potentially dangerous - driving habits of certain Irish motorists.
I'm talking of course about the attitude of some drivers who stubbornly refuse to move off the right hand lane on dual carriageways and motorways to allow cars travel at a faster pace.
I regularly travel the N11 through the Kilmacanogue and Glen of the Downs area and there the speed limit is set at a very low 40 mph.
I've lost count of the amount of times that I've seen drivers totally frustrated by inconsiderate motorists who insist on hogging the right hand lane travelling at or below 40 mph indifferent to the mounting line of traffic behind them.
I have two messages for such drivers : (a) despite what they might think, and to the best of my knowledge, nobody has appointed them as the moral guardians of the driving habits of all other road users (that's the preserve of the gardaí when I last checked) and (b) the right hand lane is supposed to be for passing - it's not a cruising lane. - Yours, etc.,
PATRICK BYRNE,
Kilmacanogue,
Co Wicklow.
