GERARD F. MOLLOY,
Sir, - Some 40 years ago myself and another undergraduate of UCD were having lunch in a restaurant in Galway city. The restaurant was full and we were approached by a gentlemen with a foreign accent who politely asked if he could share our table.
We got into conversation with him. It turned out that this tall elegant, middle-aged man had served in the German S.S. as an officer during the War. I had visited Germany in 1958 and I remarked to him what a wonderful industrial and economic recovery the country had made. He concurred, but we were riveted when he continued: "Yes, but ze old people - zey are not good for ze economy!"
It is interesting that now, many years later, The Irish Times, in an editorial (October 8th) has launched its campaign for euthanasia, thinly disguised in a (pseudo) liberal mantle.
The "success" of the Abortion Rights campaign means that in the future there will not be enough young people to sustain an aging population with pensions, medical care, etc., so when the aged become a liability rather than a productive asset, well the logical solution is euthanasia!
There is a lot of hypocrisy among those of the so-called liberal agenda who condemn the horrors of Nazism while embracing and promoting its policies in a "compassionate" guise.
This letter may be too near the knuckle for you to publish. - Yours, etc.,
GERARD F. MOLLOY,
