Local councils and the race for the presidency

Sir, – Jim Duffy's excellent article on the presidential-nominee race is timely and welcome (Opinion & Analysis, September 5th). His conclusion merits being reproduced in large bold print on the front page of every local newspaper in the country, as it is a much-needed caution to the would-be presidents and the county councils who may nominate them: "The blunt fact is that the role of councils in nominating candidates is to act as gatekeepers – to ensure only competent, qualified people able to do the job are nominated, and to keep the race free from constitutionally illiterate egotists who are only interested in building their profile for business, financial or political gain." – Yours, etc,
