Sir, - The disappearance of the column, "What's On" from your Monday and Wednesday editions represents a severe blow to a quiet but valuable contributor to the cultural life of the community, namely the local history society.
The past decade has seen a phenomenal growth of interest in local history in town and country. This was fostered by individuals and societies working at a local level, but it was certainly aided by the access to a wider audience which any inclusion in the list of events contained in "What's On" entailed. Through this thrice-weekly listing we read of lectures and activities in which a far greater number of us were able to participate than would otherwise have been the case.
The very limited listing on the Friday paper represents only a token gesture to readers who valued the Monday and Wednesday editions precisely for this guide. We appeal for its return. - Yours, etc.,
Bernadine Ruddy, Clontarf Historical Society, Dublin 3.
