Madam, – As a paediatrician and academic of long experience, now retired, I find it incomprehensible that the proposed new national childrens centre should be located at the cramped, noisy and traffic-plagued Mater Hospital site. Carmel Grimley’s letter (June 30th) says it all and I congratulate her.

I believe that the new centre could and should be developed at Our Lady’s Hospital, Crumlin, which has open spaces for children, new “state of the art” operating theatres, facilities for consultation and investigation in the splendid new tower block and a flourishing research centre.

It is also readily accessible to country patients and ambulances through the motorway system.

The letter from the Crumlin Hospital Group (June 26th) refers to outdated buildings there. Surely some of these (eg the old nurses house, the out-patients department) could be progressively demolished and replaced by modern buildings? – Yours, etc,
