Madam, - I wish to congratulate Iarnród Éireann for doing its bit to curb the spread of obesity.
I caught the non-stop train from Galway to Dublin on Sunday, 14th March, and succumbed to an urge to eat. Despite a vigilant search, I was unable to locate a dining car. I and the other 249 people on that train were prevented from adding an inch to their bellies by Iarnród Éireann ensuring that neither food, beverages or drink were available on that trip.
On the outward journey on Friday, standing room only was available before the train had left Heuston station. Who knows how many calories these standing passengers burnt up before arriving at their destination?
In all my years on public transport, I have never seen a Fianna Fáil councillor, TD or MEP using it. I attribute this to their wisdom. For, as anyone who boards the 17.17 from Dundalk to Dublin knows, it would be easier to get a seat in the Dáil than on that train. - Yours, etc.,
LIAM KIERAN, Sandymount Drive, Blackrock, Co Louth.
