Madam, - I am disappointed, though not surprised, by your attempted put-down of the encyclical Deus Caritas Est as "conservative" (Editorial, January 26th). On the contrary, this is a truly radical document which presents a wonderfully positive challenge for all, but especially for young people, to live their lives for others as they transcend from the erotic to the agapeic.
On the same page Kevin Myers incorrectly states that "commitment is the antithesis of freedom". In misunderstanding the promise that "the truth will make you free", Mr Myers fails to appreciate that the Christian meaning of vocational commitment should result in people freeing themselves from the range of enslavements offered by the marketplace. - Yours, etc,
