DAVE O'CONNOR,
Madam, - Ireland's return to action at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday night reminded me of one thing: how much I despise our home soccer support.
Firstly, some people showed up wearing Celtic and Manchester United jerseys. Why? These were the very ones who cheered joyously on hearing that England were trailing against Macedonia.
Secondly, some "supporters" booed and jeered the team at half-time and after the match. I know it was a lousy performance, but what does that do for the players' confidence? What's worse, there were Ireland "fans" in the ground who actually wanted the lads to lose! Finally, I'm 100 per cent pro-Keane, but it's a sad thing when your own support is split in two. I do feel the time has come for Mick McCarthy to go, but removing him isn't as easy a solution as everyone thinks. The players have views too. - Yours, etc.,
