Sir, - Captain A. A. Quigley's account (June 1st) of Luftwaffe bombing in Ireland during the 1939-45 war states that "the first Lutfwaffe salvo on neutral Ireland was lethal, when on August 26th, 1940 a German aircraft dropped five high explosive bombs at Campile, Co Wexford; three girls were killed."
My recollection of that day is that two German fighter bombers dropped four small bombs near a cottage in Holmanhill, near Duncormick, Co Wexford, before attacking the co operative cream cry at Campile. The four bombs, which straddled the cottage and shocked the occupier, Jem Hawkins (who was whitewashing at the time), may have been meant for the vital railway bridge at Mill o'Rags but were about half a mile wide of the mark.
Incidentally, Jem Hawkins whitewash brush was blown out of his hand that day and was never seen again! - Yours, etc.,
Kincora Avenue, Dublin 3.
