Sir, – It would appear that yet again our continental cousins in Austria and Germany have stolen a march on us. The clever divils actually use the gantries over their motorways (autobahns) to manage speed limits. Who would have thought?
They use their gantry signs to actively manage motorway speeds to counter problems such as congestion, adverse weather, accidents, closed lanes and particularly “the concertina effect”.
My fear is that the National Roads Authority will look for an Irish solution and empanel a member of the Tullow Ceilí Band to get this concertina thingy sorted.
Why do we never look at best practice elsewhere? – Yours, etc, JIM CALLAN Tallaght, Dublin 24.
