Madam, – Following the Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) calling upon the Government to establish a statutory inquiry into the Magdalene laundries (Home News, November 10th), the Government issued a statement in which they said: “The Government regrets that relevant departments were not offered an opportunity by the IHRC to contribute to the commission’s considerations of this matter to facilitate a fully balanced evaluation of all the facts.”

Odd they would regret this, given how survivors’ advocacy group Justice for Magdalenes has been giving them the opportunity to present their side of the story for the last two years by repeatedly hounding them for any information they could possibly provide. The group’s submission to the commission took place as far back as June 2010, when they also met various Government departments.
