Madam, - With major concerns such as the illegal war in Iraq, torture of Iraqi prisoners in Coalition jails and the subversion of our democracy by greed, I apologise for raising an issue of lesser importance.
Last Sunday TG4 showed the James Cagney film Yankee Doodle Dandy. The original is in black and white, but this was a colourised version - not the first instance of TG4 showing this kind of modified picture. I object to the creeping homogeneity that such practices indicate, the notion that there is a way of "improving" the original and that such "improvements" should be made.
A motion picture deserves to be shown as its director intended - black and white if so created, in the original language if not made in English. God forbid that there is should be colourised version of Casablanca, or Carol Reed's The Third Man or, worst of all, Mise Eire. - Yours, etc.,
